EFFECT: A classical mystery is given a new and unexpected finish. A brass tube and a stainless steel ball are offered for inspection. Their simplicity proclaims their innocence The magician perches the ball, which is somewhat larger in diameter than the tube, atop one end of it. The ball is obviously too large to pass through the tube. He then waves his hand over the ball in a graceful fashion and the ball is seen to grow gradually smaller and smaller, as it slowly sinks into the tube. Once the ball has sunk almost completely out of sight, the magician changes the motion of his hand, causing the ball to grow again and rise to the top of the tube. Now comes the shock. The tube, with the ball still sitting atop it, is handed without hesitation, to a spectator for examination - and he discovers that the tube is no longer a tube, but a solid cylinder of brass, making the descent and rise of the ball, as just witnessed, even more inexplicable! The ball might seem to be a sphere of mercury, were it not so obviously solid.
